Angelica Lopez

Angélica López, born in Cartagena, Colombia, is a London-based singer-songwriter celebrated for her powerful fusion of Afro-Colombian folk and contemporary genres. Launching her career at just 17, she performed rancheras with the mariachí band Dos Generaciones and gained early recognition by placing third in a national singing contest representing Bolívar.

She relocated to the UK in 2002 as part of Orquesta Original de Cartagena, representing Colombia at the International Festival of World Music (Diaspora) in London. Settling in London, Angélica founded her own folk ensemble, Papayera, channeling the vibrant rhythms of the Colombian Atlantic Coast—such as cumbia, champeta, fandango, porro, vallenato, and mapalé—infused with elements of rock and urban music.

Her dynamic performances have graced prestigious venues and festivals including WOMAD, Royal Albert Hall, Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Carnaval del Pueblo, the British Museum’s Beyond El Dorado, and even the Houses of Parliament during Refugee Week. In 2018, Angélica became the first female vocalist to win the Vocalist of the Year at the LUKAS (Latin UK Awards), cementing her as a leading figure in Latin music in Europe. Her debut album Madremonte (2016), created with Boris Caicedo and Herencia de Timbiquí, marked a milestone—accompanied by her founding of the Madremonte Indígena foundation, supporting indigenous communities in strengthening their socio-economic rights and cultural heritage.

Angélica López continues to enchant audiences across the UK and beyond with her charismatic stage presence, deeply rooted musical heritage, and commitment to social impact—making her a true ambassador for Colombian folk and culture.
