Althea Rene is a mesmerizing flutist whose soulful artistry transcends genres. Known as the “First Lady of Soul-Jazz Flute,” she blends jazz, funk, and R&B with effortless grace and precision. Althea made history as the very first jazz artist to record a flute-featured song that reached number one on the jazz charts. Her dynamic stage presence, impeccable technique, and emotional depth captivate audiences worldwide. A classically trained musician and former police officer, her powerful performances reflect strength, passion, and authenticity. With multiple chart-topping albums, she continues to redefine the role of the flute in contemporary music.

Althea Rene is a groundbreaking flutist who has redefined contemporary jazz with her soulful, genre-blending sound and captivating performances. Widely known as the “First Lady of Soul-Jazz Flute,” Althea is celebrated for her ability to seamlessly fuse jazz, funk, R&B, and Latin influences, creating a unique and instantly recognizable musical voice. Her artistry, technical brilliance, and emotional depth have earned her critical acclaim, devoted fans, and a prominent place in modern music history.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Althea was exposed to a rich musical legacy from an early age. The daughter of one of Motown’s original Funk Brothers, trumpeter Dezie McCullers, music was in her blood. She began studying the flute at age four, later receiving formal training at Howard University and earning a degree in music performance. Her classical foundation laid the groundwork for the expressive and innovative style that would define her career.

Before fully committing to life as a professional musician, Althea took an unconventional path—she served as a police officer in the Detroit Police Department for over a decade. During this time, she continued to perform and develop her musical craft. Ultimately, her passion for music led her to leave law enforcement and pursue her artistic calling full-time, a decision that has inspired many with its boldness and determination.

In 2013, Althea made history with her hit single “In the Flow,” which became the first flute-featured song ever to reach number one on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Chart. This groundbreaking achievement cemented her place as a trailblazer in the industry and opened doors for other flutists in contemporary jazz. She has since released several chart-topping albums, including In the Flow, Flawsome, Pastel Leather, and 18 Karat, each showcasing her evolving sound and mastery of her instrument.

Althea’s performances are renowned for their energy, passion, and connection with the audience. Whether on the stages of international jazz festivals, intimate clubs, or major concert halls, she brings a magnetic presence and a sense of authenticity that resonates deeply. Her improvisational skill and genre-bending compositions have earned her collaborations with renowned artists such as Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum, and Art Porter.
