Brixton’s rising 5-piece KOTOA land at Soul Mama, Stratford to celebrate their music with a full live show.
Recently signed to Wah Wah 45s, Kotoa bring a fresh, forward-thinking sound that blends political consciousness with soulful melodies, heavy basslines and deep rhythmic grooves. Drawing influence from dub, trip-hop and the new wave of African-inspired jazz, the band are fast becoming a standout force in Brixton’s historic music scene.
Formed by drummer Laurie Campling, bassist Frank Black, keyboardist Sam Hillier, guitarist/vocalist Memphis Koloi, and saxophonist/vocalist Maia Avery, Kotoa have already gained serious attention following the success of singles Higher Being and I Am, alongside their striking rework of Fela Kuti’s Zombie. The track received support from Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 6 Music and Worldwide FM, marking the band as ones to watch.
Produced by Benedic Lamdin (Nostalgia 77), Earthwise is an uplifting yet provocative debut that moves seamlessly between Afrobeat, dub, jazz and deep soul — a sound built for both movement and meaning.
